Cybathlon, the inaugural international championship competition for robot-assisted athletes, took place October 8, 2016 in Zurich, with as many as 74 athletes from 25 countries competing in six disciplines: brain computer interface race; functional electrical stimulation bike race; powered arm prosthesis race; powered leg prosthesis race; powered exoskeleton race; and powered wheelchair race. In contrast to the Paralympics, Cybathlon is not focussed on exceptional athletic performance, but on building the closest possible connections between robotic assistance devices and the everyday needs of the people who use them.
